WAN Jamak Wan Hassan became the latest victim in this year's M-League when he quit as chief coach of Negri Sembilan after a spate of poor results which also saw the team surrender the FA Cup they won for the first time last year.
Mosthakeem Omar was the first to go when he quit as Perlis coach, alleging interference from the management.
Kedah's Ahmad Yusof has been told to "take a rest for an indefinite period" due to the team's poor run in the league and failure to make the FA Cup quarter-finals after losing to newcomers Felda United.
The Johor-born Wan Jamak, a former national coach, submitted his resignation letter to Negri FA president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan, who is also the Mentri Besar, at 9am yesterday. (Tuesday 16th of March 2011)
He said his decision "is in the best interest of all parties" as Negri's poor run in the Super League and the second round exit in the FA Cup has been "politicised" by certain parties. "I had discussed the matter with Datuk Seri. He is also well aware of what is happening. It is in the best interest of all parties. Things have not gone well with Negri this season," said Wan Jamak.
"We have been hit with a spate of injuries and suspensions involving key players. This has affected the team overall." He added: "The results are not forthcoming. It is not the case of poor performance or good performance. Lady Luck has also deserted the team. I have not been able to play a full first team in any match so far this season."
Among those sidelined with injuries are Zamani Misbah, Irwan Fadli, Zaquan Adha Abdul Razak and his twin brother Aidil.
The team also lost Rezal Zambery Yahya, Abdul Rahman Zabul and Ching Hong Aik. Rezal and Abdul Rahman are now with Johor FC while Hong Aik plays for Muar Municipality Council in the Premier League. Negri are currently ninth in the 14-team Super League with nine points from seven matches. They have scored only six goals and conceded nine. But the second round exit from the FA Cup was the last straw for Negri who were touted as one of the early favourites for titles this season.
"I will take a break and spend some time with my family before deciding on my future football career. For now I will return to Johor Baru and take care of my aged mother who is in poor health," said Wan Jamak, himself a former international. - NST Friday 18th
